I purchased both the Travel Umbrella and the Fashion Umbrella to help me deal with a sun allergy. I need more than just sunscreen so I use physical sunblocking. In cooler weather, I wear hoodies and neck gaiters. But in warmer weather it gets unbearably hot, so I thought I'd try these umbrellas.
They do a good really job of blocking sun and absorbing the rays that bounces up from the sidewalk. I haven't tried them in really scorching temps, so I can't say if they keep you cooler. But it makes sense that they would given how much sunlight they reflect. They've been good in moderate wind too; no turning inside out. I prefer the Fashion umbrella to the Travel model because it's easier to hold, and covers more.
The material is more like silver vinyl than fabric. As such it's a little bit heavier than a standard umbrella of the same size. They also don't fold down as compactly as a standard umbrella. Not a big deal, but if you're going to carry the Travel umbrella in your bag, be prepared for the room and weight.
The last bit is more psychological. Having an umbrella open on a a sunny day makes me feel conspicuous. Having my umbrella be shiny silver makes that feeling stronger. It keeps me from using the umbrellas in some situations where I don't want the extra attention. I'm probably oversharing my own issues, but you should know that going in if you feel the same way.
