UV Golf Umbrellas and Parasols

UPF 50+ Shade for the Most Sun-Exposed Players on Any Course

In Short: Why Golfers Need a UV Parasol

  • Skin cancer is 2.4 times more likely in golfers than in non-golfers
  • 27% of golfers report a history of skin cancer, against 7% of the general population
  • Every hour of play delivers 3.5 to 5.4 times the UV dose that causes sunburn
  • Just 36% of golfers wear sunscreen consistently between shots
  • A UPF 50+ golf parasol gives instant shade, with nothing to reapply

The evidence comes from close to home: an Australian health survey found that golfers are 2.4 times more likely to develop skin cancer than the general population, with 27% reporting a skin cancer diagnosis compared with 7% of non-golfers. Each hour on the course exposes recreational players to 3.5 to 5.4 times the UV radiation needed to cause sunburn, yet only 36% use sunscreen consistently. A UV-Blocker golf UV umbrella gives you UPF 50+ protection that blocks 99.7% of UV rays the moment it opens, and keeps you up to 8°C cooler between shots with nothing to reapply. UV-Blocker was founded by a melanoma survivor, and our umbrellas are recommended by the Melanoma International Foundation.

Why Golfers Carry 2.4 Times the Skin Cancer Risk

Four to Five Hours in Direct Sun

Most rounds run past four hours, and many fall within peak UV hours (10 am to 4 pm). TPI research found that golf at the Tokyo Olympics had the second highest UV exposure of all 144 Olympic sports. With a golf UV parasol, you have shade the instant you need it, between every shot.

Where Sunscreen Falls Short on the Course

Sunscreen has to go back on every 2 hours, and sooner if you're sweating. Only 36% of golfers "always" wear sunscreen, and few of them top it up during a round. Seeking shade is one of Cancer Council's five sun protection steps, and a golf UV parasol is shade that needs no upkeep: open it and you're covered.

Overcast Rounds Still Carry UV Risk

A grey sky feels safer, but it isn't. The US EPA notes that 80% of UV radiation penetrates clouds, and Cancer Council says UV is present on cool or overcast days. Without the heat, golfers skip protection and burn without realising it. A golf UV parasol shields you whatever the cloud cover.

The Gap in Golf Clothing Protection

Research published in the International Journal of Golf Science found that golf apparel often lacks adequate UV protection, because brands put style ahead of photoprotection. Chances are your polo and shorts carry no UPF rating whatsoever.

Tour Professionals Get Skin Cancer Too

Several PGA and LPGA tour players, Jimmy Walker and Adam Scott among them, have needed treatment for skin cancer. In a study of female professional golfers, four young players with an average age of 28 had already developed basal cell carcinoma. Across one season, a professional golfer receives 217 times the UV radiation needed to cause sunburn. If the best players in the world need protection, so does everyone playing on the weekend.

How a Golf UV Parasol Protects Your Skin and Your Score

UPF 50+ Solarteck® Fabric, Tested to AS/NZS 4399

Our proprietary Solarteck® fabric was tested by SGS to AS/NZS 4399 and rated UPF 50+, blocking over 99% of UVA and UVB rays. A standard golf umbrella is made to keep rain off; UV-Blocker umbrellas are designed specifically for sun protection.

Up to 8°C Cooler Between Shots

Heat drags down your game and breaks sunscreen down faster. The reflective outer layer of Solarteck® bounces infrared heat away, so you stay up to 8°C cooler than in direct sun and keep your focus all the way through the back nine.

157 cm and 173 cm Canopies

Choose from 157 cm and 173 cm canopies, each big enough to shade both you and your bag while you wait to play. More canopy means more shade, with no awkward angling and no gear left out in the sun.

Tour-Standard Construction

Fibreglass ribs bend rather than break in the gusty conditions you often get on links courses. The vented double canopy stops the umbrella turning inside out, and it's made to last 100+ rounds without wearing down.

When to Open Your Golf Parasol

Walking Down the Fairway

Most of your UV exposure builds up on the walk between shots. Open your golf UV parasol and you have shade straight away for the 2–3 minutes it takes to reach your ball.

Waiting to Tee Off

On a busy day, slow play can leave you standing in the sun for 10–15 minutes. Under a golf UV parasol, that wait becomes time to recover in the shade.

Riding in a Golf Cart

A cart's roof offers very little UV protection. Holding your 173 cm golf UV umbrella overhead as you ride gives far better coverage than the built-in shade.

At the Driving Range

A bucket of 100 balls means 30+ minutes standing in one spot. Plant your parasol beside your bay, or keep it handy between buckets.

Golf Parasol and UV Umbrella FAQs

If I wear sunscreen, do I still need a golf UV parasol?

For a round of 4+ hours, sunscreen on its own falls short. It has to be reapplied every 2 hours, sweat breaks it down faster, and only 36% of golfers wear it consistently in the first place. Cancer Council's five steps pair sunscreen with shade, and a golf UV parasol gives you UPF 50+ shade instantly, with nothing to reapply. Make it your main defence and keep sunscreen as backup for when you swing.

Which golf umbrella size suits me?

Most golfers choose our 157 cm golf UV umbrella. It sits in standard bag umbrella holders and comfortably shades one player and their bag. Go for the 173 cm if you share a cart and want shade for two, or if maximum coverage matters more to you than portability. Both offer identical UPF 50+ protection.

Does carrying a golf umbrella slow down play?

It shouldn't. You pick up most of your UV while waiting, not while swinging. Close the umbrella before you address the ball and open it again once you've hit; the auto-open button does it in one second. A typical round involves 3+ hours of waiting between shots, and that's exactly when your golf UV parasol earns its place.

Do I need UV protection on an overcast day at the course?

Yes. According to the US EPA, 80% of UV radiation gets through cloud, and Cancer Council notes that UV can't be seen or felt. Because you don't feel the heat, it's easy to skip protection while the damage quietly adds up. Dermatologists specifically warn golfers not to be "lulled into a false sense of protection" on overcast days, so open your golf UV parasol whatever the sky looks like.

How often should golfers have a skin check?

Because golfers get so much more sun, dermatologists recommend annual full-body skin checks. With 27% of golfers reporting a history of skin cancer, compared with 7% of the general population, and Cancer Council noting that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, regular checks matter. Finding skin cancer early dramatically improves outcomes. A golf UV parasol lowers your risk, but you still need professional monitoring.

Look After Your Skin and Your Game.

With golfers facing 2.4 times the skin cancer risk, our golf UV parasols were designed by a melanoma survivor who knows exactly what's at stake.
