Sun Umbrellas Rated UPF 50+, Blocking 99% of UV Rays

At a Glance: Why Choose a UV-Blocker Sun Umbrella

  • Solarteck® fabric rated UPF 50+ blocks 99.97% of UVA and 100% of UVB rays
  • Up to 8°C (15°F) cooler under the canopy than in direct sunlight
  • Trusted by dermatologists and recommended by the Melanoma International Foundation
  • Started by Ron Walker, a melanoma survivor who understands real protection
  • 8 styles covering golf, beach days, travel and daily use

Most umbrellas are made to stop rain, not UV. Dark fabric with no UPF rating still allows significant ultraviolet radiation through, and lighter colours are worse. Our UV umbrellas are made with proprietary Solarteck® fabric tested to UPF 50+, blocking 99.97% of UVA and 100% of UVB rays. The reflective outer coating keeps the shade up to 8°C (15°F) cooler than direct sunlight, and the navy blue underside absorbs scattered UV reflected from surfaces like sand and concrete. UV-Blocker was founded by Ron Walker, a melanoma survivor, and our umbrellas are recommended by the Melanoma International Foundation. They protect you from strong UV from spring to early fall and work just as well in the rain the rest of the year.

Why UV Umbrellas Matter for Sun Protection in Canada

Why Sunscreen Can't Do It All

Sweat speeds up the breakdown of sunscreen, which already has to be reapplied every 2 hours. Most people put on just 25-50% of the recommended amount, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. A UV umbrella delivers reliable UPF 50+ protection that never wears down or rinses off.

Ordinary Umbrellas Fall Short on UV

An ordinary umbrella is designed to keep you dry, not to block UV, and even dark colours let significant radiation through without UPF testing. Independently tested to UPF 50+, our Solarteck® fabric blocks 99% of harmful rays.

Heat Adds to UV Damage

Hot weather means sunscreen sweats off sooner and skin is more vulnerable. The reflective coating on the outside of our canopy keeps you up to 8°C (15°F) cooler than direct sunlight, and about 4°C (8°F) cooler than standard umbrellas that trap heat.

Don't Overlook Reflected UV

UV reflects off sand (15-25%), concrete (12%) and water (10%). The navy blue underside of our canopy absorbs this scattered UV, which under a standard umbrella would bounce around and strike you from below.

Common Questions About UV Umbrellas

What does a UPF 50+ rating mean on a sun umbrella?

UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, tells you how much UV radiation a fabric stops. Our UV umbrellas are rated UPF 50+, and lab tests show the fabric blocks 99.97% of UVA rays (which cause aging and cancer) and 100% of UVB rays (which cause sunburn). That is the highest practical rating, since any fabric above UPF 50 blocks 98% or more of UV.

Do sun umbrellas still work when it's cloudy?

Yes, and cloudy days are when they count the most. The EPA reports that 80% of UV radiation passes through clouds, and Health Canada notes the UV Index can reach 3 or higher even when it is cloudy. Without the heat as a warning, people skip protection and burn without realizing it. A UV umbrella provides the same UPF 50+ protection under any cloud cover, right when you least expect to need it.

What does the navy blue underside of a UV-Blocker umbrella do?

UV rays bounce upward off reflective surfaces such as sand (15-25%), water (10%) and concrete (12%). Under a light-coloured canopy, those rays reflect back toward you, so UV is essentially trapped underneath. The navy blue underside of our umbrellas absorbs that scattered UV rather than reflecting it, a key feature missing from standard umbrellas.

What makes a UV umbrella different from a regular rain umbrella?

A regular umbrella is made of standard polyester meant to repel water, not stop UV, and dark colours without UPF testing still allow significant radiation through. UV umbrellas use specialized fabric with UV-blocking properties that is independently tested and certified. Our Solarteck® fabric also reflects infrared heat, so you stay up to 8°C (15°F) cooler than in direct sunlight, and it keeps you dry in the rain as well.

Is sunscreen still needed with a UV umbrella?

Yes. While you're under it, a UV umbrella blocks over 99.9% of UVA and UVB, but you won't be in the shade every minute. Sunscreen is your backup when you step out, for example while walking to the car or moving from place to place. Health Canada advises both seeking shade and using SPF 30+ sunscreen: the umbrella is your primary defence, and sunscreen covers the transitions.
