These are sun umbrellas you carry, not patio umbrellas: every one is UPF 50+, blocks 99% of UV rays and folds into a bag. If you're after a market or cantilever umbrella for the backyard, this isn't that range. These personal sun umbrellas are made for walking, commuting, travel and the sidelines, anywhere you need shade and there isn't any.
Choose by how you carry it. The Compact UV Umbrella weighs 425 g and folds to 29 cm for a purse. The Travel UV Umbrella folds to 44 cm for a backpack or suitcase. The Large Folding UV Umbrella has a 147 cm arc that covers two people and still folds to 51 cm. All of them double as rain umbrellas for the rest of the year.
Sun Safety in Canada
In Canada, the UV Index can reach 3 or higher between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from April to September, even when it's cloudy. At that level, Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada advise protecting your skin: seek shade or bring your own, such as an umbrella; wear clothing that covers your skin, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses; and use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes a daily UV Index forecast for cities across the country at weather.gc.ca. For more on preventing skin cancer, see the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Dermatology Association.
A UPF 50+ UV-Blocker umbrella is the "bring your own shade" part of that advice. It blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays from overhead, keeps you up to 8°C cooler than standing in direct sun, and works as a rain umbrella for the rest of the year. It's approved by the Melanoma International Foundation and recommended by dermatologists.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays, and why does it matter?
UVA rays (320–400nm) are longer waves that penetrate deep into the skin, causing photoaging, wrinkles, and contributing to melanoma. They pass through glass and clouds and are relatively constant year-round. UVB rays (290–320nm) are shorter, cause sunburn, and are the primary driver of skin cancer. They're most intense midday (10am–4pm) and in summer. Effective sun protection must block both.
How effective is a UPF 50+ umbrella compared to sunscreen alone?
A UPF 50+ umbrella blocks 99%+ of direct overhead UV — more reliable than sunscreen because it doesn't require reapplication, doesn't wash off with sweat, and provides consistent protection. However, reflected UV from surfaces still reaches skin under an umbrella. The ideal combination is SPF 50+ sunscreen + UPF 50+ umbrella for 95–99% total UV reduction. UV-Blocker's umbrellas are dermatologist-recommended for this purpose.
What time of day poses the highest UV risk?
UV radiation is highest between 10am and 4pm, peaking around noon in most locations. The UV Index is the most accurate measure — when it reaches 6 or above, unprotected skin can begin to burn in as little as 15 minutes. Cloud cover reduces UV intensity but doesn't eliminate it: 80% of UV penetrates light cloud cover.
Does skin tone affect UV damage risk?
All skin tones are affected by UV radiation, but the risk and presentation differ. People with lighter skin (Fitzpatrick types I–III) burn faster and have higher non-melanoma skin cancer rates. People with darker skin (types IV–VI) are more prone to hyperpigmentation and have a higher risk of melanoma being diagnosed at later stages. Sun protection is essential for every skin tone.
What are early warning signs of skin cancer I should watch for?
Use the ABCDE rule for moles: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolving (any change over time). Also watch for sores that don't heal, new pink or pearly bumps, and flat red or pink patches. Annual dermatologist screenings are recommended for anyone with significant sun exposure history or a family history of skin cancer.
Expert Sun Protection Recommendations
- Check the daily UV Index forecast at weather.gc.ca or a UV app before any extended outdoor activity
- Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors, not right before sun exposure
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or heavy sweating
- Use a UPF 50+ umbrella for hands-free shade during outdoor dining, sports, or work
- Wear UV-blocking sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB — eyes are vulnerable to UV-related damage
- Regular skin checks with a dermatologist can catch early-stage skin cancers when they are most treatable

Frequently Asked Questions
What size sun umbrella should I get?
It depends on how you carry it and who you're covering. The 42" compact slips into a purse or tote and is the easiest to keep with you daily. The 58" large folding model still folds down for bag carry but covers two people comfortably, so it suits walking with a partner or a kid. If you're on a course or want maximum coverage, the 62" and 68" golf models go bigger again. Every model in the collection folds, so size is about coverage, not portability.
Do sun umbrellas actually keep you cooler?
Yes. Under the UV-Blocker canopy you stay up to 8°C cooler than standing in direct sun, because the fabric blocks the radiant heat before it reaches you. That difference is most noticeable on long walks, commutes, and anywhere there's no natural shade to duck into.
Can I use a sun umbrella in the rain?
You can. All models use water-repellent nylon, so the same umbrella handles harsh sun and unexpected light rain. That's the practical reason people keep one in their bag year-round instead of swapping between a rain umbrella and a sun umbrella.
What does UPF 50+ mean on an umbrella?
UPF measures how much ultraviolet radiation a fabric lets through. UPF 50+ means the canopy blocks over 98% of UV rays, which is the highest rating fabric is given. Every umbrella in this collection is UPF 50+, so protection doesn't change with the size or style you pick. The canopy itself is dermatologist approved.
