Expert Sun Protection Recommendations
- Check the daily UV Index at weather.gov or a UV app before any extended outdoor activity
- Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors, not right before sun exposure
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or heavy sweating
- Use a UPF 50+ umbrella for hands-free shade during outdoor dining, sports, or work
- Wear UV-blocking sunglasses that block 99–100% of UVA and UVB — eyes are vulnerable to UV-related damage
- Annual skin screenings with a board-certified dermatologist can catch early-stage skin cancers when highly treatable

Sun Safety in Canada
In Canada, the UV Index can reach 3 or higher between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. from April to September, even when it's cloudy. At that level, Health Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada advise protecting your skin: seek shade or bring your own, such as an umbrella; wear clothing that covers your skin, a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses; and use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes a daily UV Index forecast for cities across the country at weather.gc.ca. For more on preventing skin cancer, see the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Dermatology Association.
A UPF 50+ UV-Blocker umbrella is the "bring your own shade" part of that advice. It blocks 99% of UVA and UVB rays from overhead, keeps you up to 8°C cooler than standing in direct sun, and works as a rain umbrella for the rest of the year. It's approved by the Melanoma International Foundation and recommended by dermatologists.
Expert Guide to Choosing and Using UV-Blocking Umbrellas
- Look for third-party UPF certification, not just manufacturer claims — independent testing matters
- Canopy size matters: about 100 cm (40") covers one person, 150 cm (60") or more covers two adults — choose based on your typical use
- Wind resistance rating is important for outdoor sports and beach use — look for umbrellas rated for winds of 50 km/h (30 mph) or more
- A magnetic or clamp base lets you use a UV umbrella hands-free at a fixed workstation, patio, or sports sideline
- The silver side of a UV-Blocker umbrella should face up — this maximizes UV reflection away from you
- Pair with UPF 50+ clothing and SPF 50 sunscreen for comprehensive protection in high UV environments
FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast will I receive my order?
We aim to ship every order by the next business day from our warehouse in Pennsylvania. Delivery time to Canada depends on the UPS or DHL service you choose at checkout.
Do you ship to Canada?
Yes. Prices are shown in Canadian dollars, orders ship with UPS or DHL, and freight to your address is calculated at checkout. Some shipping options at checkout include import duties and taxes up front; others leave them to be paid on delivery.
Do UV-Blocker sun umbrellas come in other colours?
No. UV-Blocker umbrellas only come with a reflective silver outer canopy and a dark navy underside. That combination gives the best sun protection: the silver reflects UV and heat away, and the navy absorbs UV reflected up from the ground.
Can I use the sun umbrella in the rain?
Yes. Every UV-Blocker sun umbrella doubles as a rain umbrella. Leave it open to dry fully before you close it and put it away.
How does the warranty work?
UV-Blocker offers a one-year limited warranty to the original owner against defects in materials or workmanship. If the umbrella is defective or stops working properly, send it back with a copy of your receipt and we'll repair or replace it at no cost. You pay the postage to send it to us; we pay to send the replacement back.

When is UV strongest in Canada?
According to Health Canada, the UV Index in Canada can be 3 or higher from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. between April and September, even when it's cloudy. Check the daily UV Index forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada, and protect your skin whenever it's 3 or higher.
Is a sun umbrella part of Canadian sun safety advice?
Yes. Health Canada's advice for days when the UV Index is 3 or higher includes seeking shade or bringing your own, such as an umbrella, along with covering up, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection and a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
What does UPF 50+ mean for an umbrella?
UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 50+ means the fabric lets through less than 1/50th of UV radiation, so at least 98% is blocked. UV-Blocker fabric is lab tested to AATCC TM183-2020 to block 100% of UVB and 99.97% of UVA, and the umbrellas are approved by the Melanoma International Foundation.
How is a UV-blocking umbrella different from a regular rain umbrella?
A regular rain umbrella isn't made or tested to block UV, so you can't know how much gets through. A UV-Blocker umbrella uses Solarteck® fabric with a silver reflective coating that reflects UV rays rather than absorbing them. It also keeps you up to 8°C cooler than standing in direct sun.
Is a UV-blocking umbrella effective for all skin types?
Yes. A UV-blocking umbrella is a physical barrier, so it works regardless of skin type, medication or skin condition. It's especially useful for people taking photosensitizing medication, patients having radiation therapy after cancer, people with lupus or vitiligo, and anyone who wants reliable sun protection without relying only on sunscreen.
How effective is a UPF 50+ umbrella compared to sunscreen alone?
Use both. A UPF 50+ umbrella gives steady overhead protection that doesn't need reapplying or wash off with sweat, but UV still reflects up from water, sand, pavement and snow. Health Canada recommends combining shade with clothing, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays, and why does it matter?
Both damage skin, so good protection blocks both. UVB rays are the main cause of sunburn and are strongest in the middle of the day. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, contribute to skin aging and skin cancer, and pass through cloud and glass. A UV-Blocker umbrella is tested to block 100% of UVB and 99.97% of UVA passing through the canopy.
Does skin tone affect UV damage risk?
All skin tones can be damaged by UV, but the risk differs. Lighter skin burns faster and has higher rates of skin cancer; darker skin is more prone to pigmentation, and skin cancers can be found at a later stage. Sun protection matters for every skin tone.
How do I maintain and store a UV-blocking umbrella?
Rinse it with fresh water after the beach or salt air, and let it dry open before you close it, since storing it wet can cause mildew. Avoid leaving it somewhere very hot, like a car trunk in summer. The silver reflective coating is built into the fabric, not a surface treatment that washes off.
What are early warning signs of skin cancer I should watch for?
Check moles with the ABCDE guide: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter larger than 6 mm and Evolving (any change over time). Also watch for sores that don't heal and new pink, pearly or scaly spots. If anything is new or changing, see your doctor or a dermatologist.
