What UPF 50+ Means on an Umbrella

UPF 50+ means the fabric lets through less than 1/50th of the UV that falls on it, so at least 98% is blocked. In Australia, sun protective fabrics are rated under the AS/NZS 4399 standard, where 50+ is the highest rating. UV-Blocker fabric is tested to the AATCC TM183-2020 method and blocks 100% of UVB and 99.97% of UVA. It's dermatologist recommended and approved by the Melanoma International Foundation.

Black or White? The Science of Colour

Dark fabric absorbs UV well but also absorbs heat, so it feels hot underneath. Light fabric reflects heat but can let more UV pass through. UV-Blocker's dual-layer Solarteck® canopy uses both ideas:

  • Silver top: reflects sunlight and heat, keeping you up to 8°C cooler than direct sun.
  • Navy underside: absorbs UV scattered up from the ground so it isn't reflected onto your face.

The result is UPF 50+ protection that blocks 99% of UV rays, and it's why our umbrellas only come in silver and navy.

Why an Unrated Umbrella Isn't Enough

A standard rain umbrella isn't tested for UV, so you can't know how much reaches your skin. A UPF 50+ rating means the fabric has been measured. That matters in Australia, where SunSmart recommends sun protection whenever the UV Index is 3 or above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to help you choose the right sun protection.

Does the colour of an umbrella matter for UV protection?

Colour alone doesn't tell you much; the fabric rating does. Dark fabric absorbs UV but traps heat, and light fabric stays cooler but can let more UV through. UV-Blocker combines a reflective silver top with a navy underside to get both.

Can I use a UPF 50+ umbrella in the rain?

Yes. Every UV-Blocker umbrella doubles as a rain umbrella. Let it dry open before you fold it away.

How do I know the UPF rating is accurate?

The fabric is lab tested to the AATCC TM183-2020 method: 100% of UVB and 99.97% of UVA blocked. That's a UPF 50+ result, the top rating, and the umbrellas are approved by the Melanoma International Foundation.
